Elaine Lassman Q&A

Q

You work with and advise a wide range of international clients on the world’s leading fashion and lifestyle trends and destinations. Why would you advise your clients to always make a visit to Sloane Street, when in London?

A

Sloane Street is special for me as I am a devotee of this part of SW London. I walk the streets daily whether going to the office, gym, hairdresser, favourite coffee bar, and restaurant or to the shops.

Advising a client to make a visit to Sloane Street will generally start with Harvey Nichols and then follow with a walk south to take in the new Tom Ford and Ermenegildo Zegna stores and to check out the beautiful Maisons of Bottega Veneta and Christian Dior. But it might also embrace the intimate branch of Prada, where the sales teams are so lovely and personable, or to check out what different merchandising brands who also have outlets in Mayfair are showcasing here.

As the upscale shopping heartbeat of one of the finest residential areas of Central  London, Sloane Street is the place to be seen. When I go there I would not dream of wearing the same clothesas when I go to my health club. I treat it as an occasion even though it is on my doorstep and I am there almost every other day.

Shopping there is a luxury for me – a special time that I savor, observing the stores, the merchandising, the touch of the materials, trying the clothes, in environments I feel comfortable and with people who I enjoy engaging with. I love to discuss the collections, their relevance to the season, experimenting with looks, etc.

Q

As Sloane Street’s fashion Curator, you are currently researching the finest, most exclusive and beautiful pieces from the brands on the street – what has been your favourite piece so far and why?

A

I have a love affair with sable fur. Money no object, a rare silver-tipped stroller by Fendi would be high on my list.

Q

With priceless collections, Sloane Street store managers are renowned for their enviable contact-books and power in determining who has first refusal on the inventory book. How does one get into their contact books?

A

By being a courteous, respectful and valued customer. I have always created good relationships and am known for modesty, a keen eye and respect for the store managers and their assistants. It goes a long way. They will always get special things for me, place goods on hold and prioritise me both for personal and private client dealings.

Q

You have travelled to more than 50 countries researching the finest in international fashion and lifestyle destinations, what makes London one of the world’s leading global cities in which to visit and domicile in?

A

Whenever I return to London, even with its invariably awful weather (this summer excluded) I never fail to be excited by its magnificence. From the curve of the river Thames with the historic and contemporary landmarks to the sheer vastness and greenness of the city, I love it. And always will. It has undergone, and continues to undergo, the most extraordinary regeneration of many of its former run-down inner city areas and this fuels my creative stimulation.

Seeing everything going on in the East End around Shoreditch and Spitalfields; the magnificence of The Shard and the energy of neighbouring Bermondsey; the massive redevelopment of Victoria…it is so exciting to be a part of this. London now has so much to offer in the way of shopping at every price point. Designer shopping and high street shopping just get better all the time and I love living on the doorstep of it all.

Q

If you could recommend a person one place to visit or an experience to try in their lifetime, anywhere in the globe – what would it be?

A

My favourite country is Brazil for its colour, music, vitality and design. I love the intensity of the urban metropolis of São Paulo, I never fail to be enthralled by the sheer magnificence of Rio’s topography and energy; I adore the smiling, beautiful Bahianos and those endless palm-fringed beaches of the strongly African-influenced state of Bahia.
