FACT OF THE WEEK: SIR HANS SLOANE – INVENTOR OF DRINKING CHOCOLATE

Walking around Chelsea, you’re likely to see many references to the two founding families of the area. Places like Sloane Street, Sloane Avenue and Hans Crescent were all named after Sir Hans Sloane, the Royal physician who settled in the area. He was born in Ireland in 1660 and came to London to study botany at the Chelsea Physic Garden and Apothecary at the Apothecaries’ Hall. He passed his Doctorate of Physic in 1683 and swiftly became a rising star in the medical field, travelling throughout Europe to learn more about medicine and botany.

At the age of 27, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and headed to Jamaica as physician to the 2nd Duke of Albemarle. There, he encountered cocoa and invented a recipe for mixing it with milk instead of water for health-giving properties. Two centuries later, the Cadbury Brothers were selling tins of drinking chocolate.
